![]() ![]() Catalogue entries incorporate the ownership and exhibition history of the work as well as the literature in which the work has been reproduced and cited. Every work is reproduced in color and catalogued according to the most exacting scholarly methods, based on a first-hand examination of the work. ![]() Published by Phaidon Press, each volume of the Catalogue Raisonné is profusely illustrated, acutely detailed, and contextually rich. In 1993, six years after Warhol’s death, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts partnered with Thomas Ammann Fine Art on the project, and assumed full stewardship of the Catalogue Raisonné in 2004. The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné was initiated in 1977 by the Swiss art dealer Thomas Ammann, when Warhol was not quite fifty years old and in the middle of his career. Four subsequent volumes will document the paintings and sculptures of the 1980s, and a series of volumes are planned that will be dedicated to Warhol’s drawings. ![]() The sixth volume, now in preparation, will record Warhol’s paintings of 1978-1980. Five volumes spanning the 1960s and 1970s have been published to date. The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné: Paintings, Sculptures, and Drawings is an ongoing research project sponsored by the Foundation, dedicated to documenting and publishing all of the paintings, sculptures, and drawings that Warhol produced during four enormously productive and intensely inventive decades. He promoted a collection of personalities known as Warhol superstars, and is credited with inspiring the widely used expression "15 minutes of fame".From the late 1940s until his death in 1987, Andy Warhol produced over 9,000 paintings and sculptures and nearly 12,000 drawings. His New York studio, The Factory, became a well-known gathering place that brought together distinguished intellectuals, drag queens, playwrights, Bohemian street people, Hollywood celebrities, and wealthy patrons. ![]() After exhibiting his work in several galleries in the late 1950s, he began to receive recognition as an influential and controversial artist. Some of his best known works include the silkscreen paintings Campbell's Soup Cans and Marilyn Diptych, the experimental films Empire and Chelsea Girls, and the multimedia events known as the Exploding Plastic Inevitable.īorn and raised in Pittsburgh, Warhol initially pursued a successful career as a commercial illustrator. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, advertising, and celebrity culture that flourished by the 1960s, and span a variety of media, including painting, silkscreening, photography, film, and sculpture.
